Authors' objectives:
To determine whether there is any evidence for the efficacy and/or effectiveness of glutamine for treating patients with concussions.
Authors' results and conclusions:
Forty-eight published studies were identified from our literature search. Upon examination on the titles and abstracts of these forty-eight studies, two studies were thought to be relevant and were retried in full for further appraisal. A manual search of the systematic review (level of evidence 1. Appendix 1) article retrieved in full did not provide any relevant primary study. The two primary studies that were retrieved in full did not provide any data investigating the efficacy and/or effectiveness of glutamine to treat patients with concussions. At present, there is no published evidence to support the efficacy and/or effectiveness of glutamine in treating patients with mild traumatic brain injury or concussions.
Authors' methods:
A comprehensive and systematic literature search was conducted on May 30, 2023. The search was done on commercial medical literature databases. A combination of keywords were employed in this search. No limitation, such as on the language and year of publication, was implemented in this search. With regard to expert and/or systematic review articles that were identified in our literature search, instead of appraising and summarizing these articles, we decided to trace and retrieve the relevant primary studies included in these review articles. These manually retrieved primary studies were then appraised and summarized when appropriate. We also manually searched the references of all the articles that we retrieved in full for further potentially relevant primary studies.
