Authors' objectives: To determine whether there is any evidence for the efficacy and/or effectiveness of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in treating medial epicondylitis.
Authors' results and conclusions: Thirty-six published studies were identified from the above search. Upon examination on the titles and abstracts of these thirty-six studies, twenty-three studies were thought to be relevant and were retrieved in full for further appraisal. Of these twenty-three studies, three studies were in the form of systematic review (level of evidence 1. Appendix 1) and ten studies were in the form of expert reviews review (level of evidence 5. Appendix 1). We traced the relevant primary studies of these thirteen review articles and yielded two (primary studies and one further expert review study. This new expert review did not provide any relevant primary study. At present, there is some evidence, coming from low level (level 3 and 4), low quality primary studies, on the short-term effectiveness of PRP in treating medial epicondylitis. This evidence should be interpreted with caution due to the potential effect of selection bias, chance and confounding that cannot be clearly separated from the observed outcomes.
Authors' methods: A comprehensive and systematic literature search was conducted on August 22, 2023. A combination of keywords was employed on this search. No limitation, such as on the language or date of publication, was implemented in this search. A manual search was also done on the references of the articles that were retrieved in full.
