Original Title:
L'orthophonie pour la dysfonction laryngée
Authors' objectives:
The term “laryngeal dysfunction” encompasses a wide variety of aberrant functional states often overlapping in the same individual. These include conditions associated with sensory impairment (e.g., chronic cough) or motor impairment (e.g., increased tendency for inappropriate glottal closure) of the laryngeal system. Several treatment options exist, although the optimal approach is unclear. One option that remains substantially underused in clinical practice is speech-language therapy. In this context, the Multidisciplinary Services Directorate of the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute – Laval University (Institute) requested that the Health Technology Assessment Unit determine the safety and clinical effectiveness of speech-language therapy interventions for laryngeal dysfunction.
Authors' results and conclusions:
The literature search identified five systematic reviews, two randomized clinical trials, 14 non-randomized studies and three evidence-based practice guidelines addressing the safety and clinical effectiveness of speech-language therapy interventions for laryngeal dysfunction.
Authors' recommendations:
In the context of the asthma clinic at the Institute, it was recommended to integrate speech-language therapy expertise into the treatment team to optimize the management of people aged 13 and over, suffering from laryngeal dysfunction (strong recommendation; low-quality evidence).
