Original Title: Évaluation des technologies permettant l’induction d’une hypothermie thérapeutique chez les patients ayant subi un arrêt cardiaque
Authors' results and conclusions: The available evidence suggests that therapeutic hypothermia is associated with a possible improvement in survival and neurological prognosis when used in the management of unconscious patients after cardiac arrest. In addition, the use of therapeutic hypothermia in a controlled care environment is associated with a low level of risk of adverse events in this population. In total, eight cooling methods were evaluated in the identified randomized clinical trials. However, the currently available evidence is insufficient for determining an optimal cooling method.
Authors' recommendations: Considering all of the evidence, it is recommended that the medical practice of using therapeutic hypothermia be maintained for adults in a coma following resuscitation for cardiac arrest, without, however, specifying the optimal method of cooling. The Quebec Heart and Lung Institute – Laval University’s Health Technology Assessment Committee also suggests taking into consideration other elements in the decision-making process with regard to the preferred cooling method, such as the technical performance of the device, as well as budgetary and organizational aspects.
