Original Title: Plasma rico en plaquetas en patología ortopédica seleccionada
Authors' recommendations: Low-quality evidence suggests that using platelet-rich plasma for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, lateral epicondylitis and anterior cruciate-ligament as well as Achilles tendon reconstruction may yield a marginal net benefit since it showed mild improvement in joint function and pain when compared with standard treatment. Low-quality evidence suggests that using platelet-rich plasma for the treatment of tendinopathies (Achilles, kneecap, rotator cuff) and hip osteoarthritis would not yield a net benefit since no improvement in joint function or less pain have been observed. Moderate-quality evidence shows that adding platelet-rich plasma in rotator arthroscopic repair, may probably yield a higher net benefit since it shows a 44% decrease in risk of rerupture and also joint function improvement when compared with arthroscopic repair only. The clinical practice guidelines analyzed do not recommend using platelet-rich plasma for the treatment of osteoarthritis or tendinopathies. The private United States health insurance companies do not cover platelet-rich plasma use for these conditions since they consider it experimental. No local economic evaluations have been found, so the cost-effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma for this indication is unknown.
