Original Title:
Arcoterapia Volumétrica Modulada en pacientes con cáncer de pulmón, próstata, gliomas de alto riesgo y tumores de cabeza y cuello
Authors' recommendations:
No randomized studies comparing the efficacy and safety of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) with other external radiation therapy technologies such as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) for the treatment of central nervous system, head and neck, prostate and lung tumors, have been found.
Very low-quality evidence does not allow to draw conclusions on the effectiveness and safety of VMAT since clinically non-relevant outcomes from patients have been analyzed. The evidence mainly refers to clinical dosimetry studies and it does not allow to determine if the differences observed in some cases might translate into clinical benefits for the patient. It suggests that its main benefit would be to reduce treatment time when compared with intensity modulated radiation therapy.
Some clinical practice guidelines mention volumetric arc therapy among the therapeutic options for the treatment of the central nervous system, head and neck, and lung tumors.
No coverage policies describing the use of volumetric modulated arc therapy have been found.
No cost-effectiveness or budget impact studies have been found in Latin America.
