Original Title:
Tomografía de coherencia óptica: utilidad en glaucoma, retinopatía diabética y degeneración macular asociada a la edad
Authors' recommendations:
No evidence showing that the use of optical coherence tomography improves clinical outcomes has been found.
Low-quality evidence might suggests that optical coherence tomography might have an adequate diagnostic performance in detecting abnormalities in the optical nerve head and in the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in patients with glaucoma; although no clear benefits over other imaging methods such as laser scanning ophthalmoscopy or scanning laser polarimetry have been observed.
Low-quality evidence might suggest that optical coherence tomography might also have adequate diagnostic accuracy to detect diabetic macular edema and clinically significant macular edema in patients with diabetic retinopathy, as well as to detect neovascular activity in patients with age-related macular degeneration. No evidence directly comparing its accuracy and diagnostic performance with other methods such as fluorescein angiography has been found.
The coverage policies surveyed show that public health funders from Brazil and the United States cover it. One American private funder also covers it.
Even though no cost-effectiveness and budgetary impact studies have been found in Argentina, its cost is lower than its usual comparators.
