Original Title: Vertebroplastia o cifoplastia en fracturas vertebrales osteoporóticas
Authors' recommendations: CONCLUSIONS High-quality evidence shows that the use of vertebroplasty is not associated to significant improvement in pain, functional disability or overall quality of life in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures when compared with a simulated procedure which included local anesthesia administration at the level of the vertebra involved. Low-quality evidence suggests that vertebroplasty might provide benefit in pain and functional disability reduction after 12 months when compared with conventional medical management and that it might have a transient marginal benefit in quality of life after three months of follow up. Low-quality evidence suggests there would not be significant differences in efficacy between vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. As regards procedure safety, although no significant differences versus placebo or conventional treatment have been found, some serious or very serious adverse events were reported in observational studies. Very low-quality evidence does not allow drawing conclusions on the effect of vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty in overall mortality at long term in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Some clinical practice guidelines recommend the use of vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty in patients with severe pain refractory to medical management. Most Latin American sponsors do not mention or cover it. Private and public sponsors from the United States and the United Kingdom health system cover it only in patients with severe pain, refractory to medical management.
