CONCLUSIONS
Low-quality evidence would not allow determining the clinical advantage associated to the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of tendinopathies or as supplement of other ligament or tendon repair surgical procedures of the shoulder and knee. This evidence might suggest a mild reduction of pain at short-term in patients with tendinopathy treated with PRP when compared with those who used other treatments, as well as a slight improvement in the function at long term.
The Canadian Health Technology Assessment Agency could not determine its effectiveness because the evidence surveyed was heterogeneous and of low quality. Regarding coverage of this technology, only the United Kingdom public health sponsor authorizes its coverage after making administrative and medical arrangements with its health system.
The clinical practice guidelines surveyed do not mention or widely recommend its use.
In Argentina, the cost-effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma for these indications is unknown.
