Authors' recommendations: CONCLUSIONS Very low quality evidence does not allow determining if single-donor platelet concentrates reduce transfusion-related viral and bacterial infections, and minor allergic reactions, when compared with platelet concentrates from multiple-donor whole blood. In the case of transfusion-related pulmonary injury both preparations might have similar risk. Most clinical practice guidelines consider both alternatives as valid. Most of the coverage policies consulted do not make specific reference to single-donor platelet apheresis. Even though no cost-effectiveness, financial or organizational impact studies have been found, its cost is not high when compared with its comparator and the expected financial impact is not significant; therefore, it might have a reasonable cost-effectiveness.
