Original Title: Desorción/ionización por láser asistida por matriz con analizador tipo tiempo de vuelo (MALDI-TOF) en infecciones
Authors' recommendations: CONCLUSIONS Moderate quality evidence shows that matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight analyzer for microbial identification in bacterial and fungal infections has a high diagnostic accuracy (although certain cases might require additional identification tests) and would reduce time to microbiological identification. Low quality evidence suggests that MALDI-TOF would be of clinical benefit by reducing hospital length of stay and infection recurrence. However, in order to translate the potential reduction in identification times into a better and quick antimicrobial therapy, there should be effective communication among the laboratory specialists, the Infectious Diseases Department and the remaining treating physicians. Only two clinical practice guidelines mention the use of MALDI-TOF as a valid technique for the microbiological diagnosis of blood infections. No cost-effectiveness studies were found assessing the use of MALDI-TOF. Nevertheless, low quality evidence suggests that the use of this technique might be related to a decrease in hospital expenses at mid-term.
