Authors' objectives:
The aim of this multi-technology HTA was to assess 21 minimally invasive surgical treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), either comparing minimally invasive treatments to each other or to a standard surgical treatment such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or open prostatectomy (OP), in patients with an indication for surgical treatment.
The development of minimally invasive technologies has provided alternatives to TURP and OP that are expected to have at least similar effectiveness, but more favourable impact on patient quality of life and better safety profile. This multi-technology HTA provides information on direct comparisons assessed by randomised controlled trials, considering both summary estimates of their relative effects and structured information on the quality of the related evidence.
