Cataract technologies

Authors' results and conclusions: There is a substantial amount of high level evidence available for cataract treatment, including studies comparing different types of intraocular lenses, surgical techniques and patient groups. However, differences between groups were generally small, and the meaning of the differences to the patients not explored. This indicates that there is no one technology that is clinically superior to another; indeed, all technologies explored had harms and benefits associated with them. Choosing a treatment for a patient relies on an understanding of those harms and benefits relative to the person, the preferences and experience of the physician and the wishes of the patient. No other effective preventive measures or treatments were identified in this Overview.
Authors' recommendations: Cataracts represent a considerable burden of disease in Australia and New Zealand, and the prevalence of cataracts will continue to rise given an ageing population. As such the identification of new and emerging technologies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cataract, in addition to methods of patient prioritisation for the treatment of cataract, provides valuable information to the jurisdictions. HealthPACT recommends that this report be distributed widely within government and the jurisdictions to inform: 1) policy, planning and investment decisions by governments and jurisdictions; and 2) consideration by relevant peak bodies, providers and patient/consumer advocacy groups.
