Original Title: Estrategias para favorecer y potenciar la Enfermería basada en la evidencia en la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco
Authors' objectives: Promote evidence-based practice among nurses in the context of the Basque Health System SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES 1. Gather, assess and synthesize the evidence on interventions that promote learning and the application of evidence-based practice. 2. Establish how often Basque health service nurses use research results in their nursing activities and seek to identify factors that influence this practice. 3. Identify the needs of Basque health service nurses in relation to evidence-based practice. 4. Design a multimodal intervention that facilitates the access to information and tools related to evidence-based practice. 5. Design impact assessment tools.
Authors' results and conclusions: We found a high quality systematic review published in August 2016 conducted following the guidelines of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination and assessed the data it provided through qualitative content analysis and narrative synthesis. This review included 32 studies and aimed to collect, assess and synthetize the available evidence to date on educational interventions on evidencebase nursing, implementation of journal clubs and the impact of relevant educational interventions for nurses regarding the implementation of clinical practice guidelines. The questionnaire was completed by 1108 Basque Health Service nurses. Most (88.3%) of the participants were women, and just over half (54.1%) were between 35 and 54 years old. Around half (52.9%) reported more than 20 years of work experience and just under half (47.3%) estimated that more than 60% of their practice was evidence based. When these nurses were asked about their activity over the past year, 63.3% reported not having participated in any activities related to research or evidence-based practice within their organization (training or sessions in their unit, etc.). Notably, when asked about opportunities they saw for applying evidence-based practice, 64.3% were able to identify situations in their routine practice in which they would have needed an evidence-based response. CONCLUSIONS It is necessary to promote an evidence-based working environment among nurses. For this, we need to establish multimodal strategies that promote and strengthen the use and application of research in clinical nursing practice such as activities that promote awareness and dissemination of information concerning evidence-based practice and training activities, and evaluate their impact.
Authors' methods: The methodological approach proposed was implemented in several stages. First, we searched for the most effective interventions related to evidence-based practice. Second, in parallel, we designed and administered an ad hoc questionnaire to assess the perceptions of evidence-based practice and identify related needs among nurses working in the Basque Health Service (Osakitetza). Analysis of the results of the first two stages was then use to guide the design of a multimodal intervention strategy to promote evidence-based practice.
