Original Title: Hiperplasia benigna de próstata: diagnóstico y tratamiento
Authors' objectives: To assess the effectiveness and cost of different methods used in the diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Authors' results and conclusions: For patients with slight symptomatology, watchful waiting should be recommended. Those symptoms which require surgery as the appropriate treatment, are easily identificable by the urologist. For patients with moderate or severe cases there are a number of therapeutic options available: watchful watiting, pharmacological treatment and surgery. The right decision must be taken in accordance with the preferences of the patient, life expectancy and the cost of the treatment.
Authors' recommendations: In accordance with the available scientific evidence, watchful waiting and surgery (when necessary or requested by the patient), are recommended as the best option from the cost-effectiveness point of view.
Authors' methods: - Bibliographical search of databases: Medline, Cochrane Library, INAHTA, ECRI. - Manual search of articles relating to this subject, published in the most relevant magazines. - Selection of information which meets quality standards with regard to carrying out and obtaining results from surveys of this kind. - Summary of the selected information and the preparation of tables summarising scientific evidence. - Survey of the medicine consumed in these treatments and analysis of the associated costs. - Examination of the demand for hospital treatment through the MBDS-hospital admissions registry. - Analysis of the costs relating to the demand for hospital care for cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia, according to the most frequently-used therapeutic procedures. This is done with information provided by the Patient Management Categories (PMC) registry. - Preparation of algorithms to aid diagnostic and therapeutic decisions relating to cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
