Original Title: Neuroestimulación eléctrica periférica para el dolor crónico refractario: efectividad y seguridad
Authors' results and conclusions: Current evidence about the effectiveness and safety of peripheral electrical neurostimulation as a treatment for different types of chronic pain is limited and often remains undetermined due to deficiencies in the methods used by the studies and the selection of patients. Therefore, the use of these techniques should be assessed individually according to the patient’s preferences, affordability and/or response to treatment and the results of the evidence from cumulated RCT or prospective registers of patients with chronic pain
Authors' methods: A systematic review was developed. Searches were conducted from March 2012 including randomized controlled trials (RCT), non-randomized controlled trials, case series and case reports. No study design filters were used and information from ongoing studies was sought. The following databases were searched: The Cochrane (Wiley) CENTRAL Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE (Ovid) and MEDLINE In Process (Ovid), EMBASE (Ovid), The Cochrane Library (Wiley) and ClinicalTrials.gov. Records were independently screened by two reviewers using standardized criteria based on title and abstract in Covidence digital platform. Both reviewers carried out data extraction using standardised data tables and quality assessment of RCT and systematic reviews using The Cochrane Collaboration´s Risk of Bias Tool and AMSTAR 2, respectively. Study characteristics and findings (including case series) were presented in detail in summary tables. When it was allowed by the data, a meta-analysis was carried out using a random effects model. The overall quality of the evidence for selected key outcomes was rated according to the GRADE framework.
