Authors' objectives: To assess the evidence of effectiveness and safety in the prophylactic use of acetylsalicylic acid in the primary prevention of myocardial infarction, stroke and colon cancer.
Authors' recommendations: There is insufficient evidence to support the prophylactic use of ASA in the general population to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke and colon cancer. ASA prophylaxis is effective in various groups who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease. However, more effective treatments are available for some conditions, such as atrial fibrillation, which are associated with a high risk of stroke, though such treatments are associated with a higher risk of complications.
