Authors' objectives:

This report aims to assess the therapeutic value of proton therapy.

Authors' recommendations: The CEDIT is of the opinion that treatment using protons has shown proven effectiveness in melanomas of the eye and skull-base chordomas and chondrosarcomas. However, there remain certain gray areas with regard to the role played by this new form of treatment in comparison with radiosurgery. The proposal for the extension of indications would need to be validated in this regard. The excellence of the Centre de Protontherapie d'Orsay is acknowledged. Its patient treatment levels with patients coming from France and abroad makes it the most active in Europe. The circumstances requiring high investment in this centre to maintain performance and continue growth in patient levels, however, lead us to propose a fundamental review of its organization, even perhaps creating a new center for proton therapy whose administrative description would involve a more national character.
