Authors' objectives:

This report aims to evaluate the advantaged and disadvantages of middle ear implants in the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss.

Authors' recommendations: The middle ear implant offers a technological benefit for hearing impaired adults who do not draw benefit from a hearing aid and whose auditory loss is insufficient to justify a cochlear implant. The indication for implantation based on 'failure of a hearing aid' is not clearly established, the devices have not been compared with each other, and they have not been tested in a noisy environment. The technology is currently diversifying, but presents the risk of being distributed outside the framework of best practices before the actual role and place of such implants is determined by the ENT community.
Authors' methods: Systematic review, expert opinion
