Authors' recommendations: There is no evidence directly assessing the use of motorized intramedullary nails in achondroplasia or hypochondroplasia. Very low quality evidence on the use of motorized intramedullary nails in bone lengthening for other conditions do not allow drawing conclusions on their safety and efficacy. The clinical practice guidelines consider that bone lengthening in achondroplasia is a risky procedure and of uncertain outcome. The coverage policies consulted do not cover bone lengthening with motorized intramedullary nails because they consider short stature correction as a cosmetic procedure.
