Authors' objectives: To assess the available evidence on the efficacy, safety and coverage related aspects regarding the use of biofeedback in patients with fecal, urinary or mixed incontinence. Urinary incontinence (UI) is the incapacity to keep urination under control. Fecal incontinence (FI) is the loss of bowel movement control. Half of the FI cases also experience associated UI. Biofeedback is considered to increase the effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) in UI or FI.
Authors' recommendations: Evidence of moderate quality suggests that therapy combined with biofeedback and pelvic floor muscle training might be beneficial in relieving symptoms in patients with urinary or fecal incontinence at short term. No studies assessing the long-term effects of biofeedback on urinary or fecal incontinence were found. The clinical practice guidelines consulted agree on considering biofeedback as an alternative despite there is uncertainty on its effects. Some United States private health sponsors cover fecal and urinary incontinence while others cover urinary incontinence only.
