Authors' objectives: Heart failure (HF) is a chronic condition that develops over time due to circumstances that overwork and damage the heart; the primary causes include coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. HF is characterized by the inability of the heart to pump blood efficiently. Dysfunctional conditions of the heart, such as those associated with HF, can lead to pulmonary hypertension. Thus, monitoring changes in pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) may provide a way to monitor changes in HF and result in improved HF management. Description of Technology: The CardioMEMS (CM) HF System is a wireless implantable hemodynamic monitor (IHM) that measures PAP and heart rate in patients with HF. The CM-IHM system consists of an implantable PAP sensor, a transvenous catheter delivery system, a patient home monitoring electronic system, and a secure Internet-accessible database that allows clinicians to access patient data. A dime-size wireless sensor is permanently implanted in the pulmonary artery via fluoroscopy-guided right heart catheterization while the patient is mildly sedated. The CM-IHM home monitoring components include a pillow containing the antenna to capture the sensor reading, a bedside monitoring unit to which the pillow is connected via a cable, and a remote button. Each sensor reading captures 18 seconds of data that are wirelessly transmitted to a secure database that physicians can access and use to optimize HF medical management. Patient Population: The CardioMEMS HF System is indicated for New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III HF patients who have been hospitalized for HF in the previous year.
