Authors' recommendations: There is evidence of moderate quality showing that percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale for secondary prevention of stroke would be similar or slightly better than medical treatment. The Clinical Practice Guidelines do not recommend it as first option; its indication is limited to patients who failed medical treatment or with contraindications. The United States private sponsors differ in coverage, while the British Public Health System does cover it. No evidence was found regarding primary prevention of stroke and the only guide mentioning primary prevention recommends.
