Purpose of Technology: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) relies on detection of reflected infrared light to generate a highly detailed, magnified view of a thin layer of tissue. This technology has been adapted to percutaneous catheters and is being used to examine features of intracoronary plaques and stents that may increase the risk of subsequent adverse events such as clot formation or blockage of the affected coronary artery.
Relevant Questions: Does use of OCT accurately predict complications related to PCI with stenting and adverse cardiac events in patients with CAD? Does OCT provide information that improves the care of patients who have CAD? Is OCT safe? Which patients might be suitable candidates for OCT?
