                Authors' recommendations:
Description of Technology: The PleurX peritoneal catheter enables ascites drainage to be performed in the patient's home. The device consists of an internal fenestrated (containing holes or pores) silicone catheter and an external valve mechanism. The valve prevents the passage of fluid or air in either direction unless it is accessed by the PleurX drainage line or vacuum bottles. PleurX catheters are typically placed using a tunneling method, in which the catheter is inserted into the peritoneal cavity via 1 incision site and exits the peritoneal cavity via a short tunnel beneath the skin and out through a second incision site. Patients or caregivers are trained in the drainage process utilizing a plastic vacuum bottle with an attached drainage line. Ascites should be drained every 1 to 2 days, depending upon need and the physician's instructions.
Patient Population: The PleurX peritoneal catheter system is indicated for intermittent drainage of symptomatic, recurrent, malignant ascites that does not respond to medical management of the underlying disease.
