Authors' recommendations: Description of Technology: The Catalys femtosecond laser operates in the infrared range and uses ultrafast pulses with a duration of 600 femtoseconds (1 femtosecond equals 1×10-15 seconds). The Catalys Precision Laser System comprises a femtosecond laser, a Liquid Optics Interface, and an integrated 3-dimensional (3D) Full Volume Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) image guidance system. The first step of the femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery procedure using the Catalys is to dock the eye to the laser's OCT system and produce a 3D map of the anterior chamber, lens, and capsule. The software of the laser system creates a surgical plan and the operating ophthalmologist reviews the customized plan, adjusts it as necessary, and maintains a live view of the eye during the operation. The laser is used to perform the capsulotomy, fracture the nucleus of the lens, and create corneal incisions through which phacoemulsification can be performed, after which the surgeon completes the phacoemulsification and inserts the intraocular lens. Patient Population: The Catalys Precision Laser System is indicated for use in adult patients undergoing cataract surgery for removal of the crystalline lens.
