Authors' recommendations: There is evidence of low methodological quality, assessing the use of eye tracking devices as augmentative and alternative communication in patients with language and motor speech disorders. The evidence reviewed did not show this technology is effective or better than other methods in improving communication. Some qualitative studies showed these devices could ease communication in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but these studies were conducted in few patients, with short-term follow up and had methodological limitations. No evidence was found on the effectiveness for other disorders, or studies comparing the Tobii device and other eye tracking devices. Among the reviewed clinical practice guidelines, only the British Guideline on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and motor neuron disease mentions it as an alternative to be considered. The coverage policies assessed do not cover it.
