Authors' recommendations: The evidence found supporting the use of bipolar transurethral resection in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia is of good methodological quality. This is an efficacious and safe technique confirmed up to one-year follow up; its efficacy at longer term is unknown. Comparison with other endoscopic techniques (monopolar transurethral resection, enucleation or laser resection) shows they have similar efficacies in terms of improved maximum urinary flow, post-void residual urine volume, urinary symptoms and quality of life. When compared with the monopolar technique, there is a decreased risk of the perioperatives complications, while tholium laser resection might have a lower rate of urethral stenosis and perioperative morbidity. Comparison with other techniques did not evidence clinically significant differences in the rate of complications.
