Authors' recommendations: Description of Technology: Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) impregnated disinfection caps have recently been introduced as an adjunct to standard methods for preventing catheter-related bloodstream infections (particularly catheter line associated bloodstream infections) in hospitalized patients requiring venous access. Most disinfection caps on the market are threaded, luer-lock style caps containing a small sponge impregnated with 70% IPA. The cap provides scrubbing and cleaning as it is twisted on and off the needleless connector (hub or port). A new cap is used each time the catheter hub is accessed and is left in place while the hub is not in use. By leaving the cap in place while the hub is not in use, the cap acts as both a physical and chemical barrier against potential contaminants. The healthcare providers who are usually involved in establishing central venous catheter access and in cleaning and caring for the catheters are certified infusion nurses or medical-surgical nursing staff. Other involved specialties include vascular access team nurses and interventional radiologists who may assist with insertion of peripherally inserted central lines, and infection control personnel. Patient Population: IPA-impregnated disinfection caps for needleless connectors are applied to catheter hubs and are not in direct contact with the patient. Manufacturer-supplied information indicates disinfection caps can be used in all patients with intravenous catheters, including pediatric and neonatal populations. No specific patient selection criteria have been defined.
