Authors' recommendations: Purpose of Technology: Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) involves the 3-dimensional analysis of wave propagation and tissue deformation in patients suspected of or known to have chronic liver disease. MRE is based on the principle that fibrosis changes the elasticity and viscosity of tissue. By assessing the propagation of acoustic waves through liver tissue, the extent of fibrosis may be indirectly derived. Relevant Questions: What is the accuracy of MRE relative to histopathology in detecting and staging hepatic fibrosis? What is the accuracy of MRE relative to other technologies in detecting and staging hepatic fibrosis? Are safety issues associated with MRE? Have definitive patient selection criteria been established for the use of MRE in detecting and staging hepatic fibrosis?
