Purpose of Technology: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) is a potential treatment alternative for patients with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who have tried continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) but have failed to find relief, or for OSA patients who cannot use CPAP therapy. Fully implanted HGNS systems sense breathing patterns and deliver mild electrical stimulation to the genioglossus muscle via the hypoglossal nerve and maintain airway patency during sleep.
Relevant Questions: Does HGNS therapy reduce OSA severity, improve sleep parameters, and increase quality of life? Is HGNS therapy safe? Have definitive patient selection criteria been established for the use of HGNS therapy?
