ADI-PEG 20 for hepatocellular carcinoma – second line

Authors' objectives:
Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of liver cancer. Most cases of hepatocellular carcinoma are caused by cirrhosis, where the liver is damaged and scarred. This is often caused by excessive alcohol intake or having long term infections with hepatitis B or C. It is more common in men than women and typically affects older people.
ADI-PEG 20 is a new type of drug that is injected into the muscle. Some studies have suggested that ADI-PEG 20 may help patients with hepatocellular carcinoma when other treatments are no longer working. Another study is trying to show how well it works and that it is safe to use. If licensed for use in the UK, ADI-PEG 20 could be a new treatment option for people with hepatocellular carcinoma.
