Authors' objectives:
Medical research is conducted to improve the population's health. Some research has an impact when published, but most studies contribute to the bigger picture by being gradually included in systematic reviews informing clinical practice and new research. Development of systematic reviews led to the increased scrutiny of published research. Such reviews and later "research into research" have uncovered widespread problems with poor methodology, reporting and publication practices - issues severely reducing the reliability of available evidence that informs clinical practice. The EQUATOR programme was set up in 2006 to tackle the low reliability and compromised usability of research publications. Our key focus is to provide free online resources, education and training supporting rigorous publication practices. Our online portal now attracts 22,000 visits per month. Our courses and seminars have so far been attended by 380 participants and over 800 people have attended our 4 international conferences. The main objective of our proposed 5-year programme is to further advance the development, promotion and use of our unique open resources targeting biomedical scientists, editors and peer reviewers. In particular we will enhance our reporting guidelines database and further develop toolkits and focused education supporting improved research publications, thus improving the evidence that supports patient care. This application is for funds to cover the first 12 months of the five-year programme.
