Authors' recommendations: The insertion of a prophylactic PEG probably results in little or no difference in survival and health related quality of life in patients with H&N cancer. Since, autonomy, independence and integrity of the patient will all be affected by a prophylactic gastrostomy it is of utmost importance to inform the patient thoroughly, and correctly, about this type of nutritional support. It is equally important that the patient is fully aware that his or her opinion is crucial in the final decision to accept prophylactic placement of the gastrostomy.
