Authors' objectives: This document synthesises the evidence for the use of percutaneous left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion as a method of stroke prevention for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) – a common cardiac arrhythmia. AF patients face a five-fold increase in stroke risk over non-AF patients and LAA occlusion is a way to mitigate that risk (Lever & Larsen, 2011).
