Haematuria: presentation, diagnostic pathway and alternative diagnostic options

New Zealand National Health Committee (NHC)
Record ID 32016000570
English
Authors' objectives: An opportunity to test the development of a New Zealand designed diagnostic test for bladder cancer, as well as the work in Genomics, has informed the NHC's more detailed work in the diagnosis of patients who present at their GP or hospital with blood in their urine (haematuria). The analysis in Haematuria: Presentation, Diagnostic Pathway and Alternative Diagnostic Options outlines the clinical presentation and underlying causes of haematuria, and identifies interventions that could improve the pathway of care. Diagnostic options reflect the development of genomics as a diagnostic tool.
Authors' recommendations: The NHC Executive considers further analytical work is appropriate on the use of urinary biomarker tests in the diagnostic pathway for haematuria, examining their effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. A particular focus should be on those tests that show high sensitivity.
