Authors' objectives:
The NHC recommended in 2014 as part of its assessment of a suite of Cardiac interventions that LAAO not be publicly funded in New Zealand. However, the Committee undertook to review the latest evidence around the intervention in order to assess if this recommendation should remain in place.
Authors' recommendations:
The NHC's appraisal of the evidence is that its advice of 2014 to the Minister of Health remains valid, and that percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) for the prevention of stroke in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) should not be publicly funded.
