English
Authors' objectives: The ivWatch Model 400 patient monitor helps doctors and nurses find out whether a drip in the vein is leaking into the surrounding tissue. If this happens, it can cause pain, infection, tissue damage and loss of limb. The ivWatch system contains a patient monitor, a light, and a single-use container that secures the light next to the skin. This light shines on the area around the drip site and any changes are shown on the patient monitor. The developer says that this is the first device of its kind and may lead to earlier detection of leaks and as a result may improve patient care and safety.
