Authors' objectives: Diabetes is a common life-long condition. People with diabetes have very high levels of glucose, a type of sugar, in their blood because their bodies do not make enough insulin or the insulin does not work properly. Diabetes can cause foot problems, such as infections and ulcers. Some people may have their feet amputated if the ulcer or infection is severe. Pexiganan is a new antibiotic cream for diabetic foot ulcers. Some studies have suggested that pexiganan can treat mild infections in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. More studies are trying to show how well pexiganan works and whether it is safe to use. If pexiganan is licenced for use in the UK, it could be a new treatment option for patients with diabetic foot ulcers.
