Authors' recommendations: The assessment of surgical haemostatic agents that was carried out by HAS was based on analysis of the literature and on the opinion of a working group. A literature search as of 30 September 2010 revealed one metaanalysis and 52 randomised controlled studies (corresponding to 55 publications). Data provided by device manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies was taken into account. The working group consisted of 15 experts: surgeons, an intensive care physician/anesthesiologist, a haematologist, a pharmacist and a methodologist, in public or private practice. In order to assess the clinical usefulness of these products in novel surgical situations, methodologically-sound clinical studies should be carried out. Finally, improved monitoring with collection of data on exposure to these products should be established systematically, in order to avoid losing useful information.
