Authors' recommendations: The committee concludes that 2,6-xylidine is suspected to be carcinogenic to man, and recommends classifying the compound in category 2. Based on the available data, the committee furthermore recommends classifying the substance as a germ cell mutagen in category 2 (Substances which cause concern for humans owing to the possibility that they may induce heritable mutations in the germ cells of humans). The substance acts by a stochastic genotoxic mechanism.
