Authors' recommendations: High-methodological quality evidence showed that raltegravir is efficacious for the treatment of adult patients infected with the immunodeficiency virus both in naive and previous treatment failures. Most clinical practice guidelines consider it a good option for children and for patients co-infected with hepatitis C and after exposure to potentially contagious sources. Some of them mention their costs as a limitation to its potential use. The recommendations and coverage policies surveyed consider its use, although the World Health Organization limits its use to the cases with prior treatment failure.
