Authors' recommendations: On the basis of the established evidence, judged to be of moderate to high quality, INESSS concludes that psychotherapy is as effective as pharmacotherapy in the treatment of adult patients with moderate anxiety and/or depressive disorders. Moreover, the beneficial effects of psychotherapy last longer after treatment than those associated with pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy is associated with a lower likelihood of relapse. The published economic analyses indicate that, compared with pharmacological treatment, psychological interventions have a better incremental cost-effectiveness ratio and greater profitability in the long term.
