Authors' recommendations: None of the tools assessed meet the criteria of both good reliability and good validity (efficacy). When actuarial tools are part of an integrated assessment system, or structured decision making (SDM), they provide better assessment of the risk of maltreatment than when used alone. In addition, the consulted practitioners expressed interest in a maltreatment risk assessment tool. According to them, the utility of this type of tool lies in the fact that it harmonizes the assessment practices that it introduces (standardization of the intervention process, common terminology and assessment criteria, better assessment of the priority and intensity of services). They also see the applicability of this type of tool as being subject to certain conditions: the stage of the intervention process at which it must be used, its distinctiveness in relation to the tools already in use, its capacity to take into account client characteristics and the progress in their situations, common training offered to all staff, clear guidelines on its procedures and uses, and an inter-institutional agreement on the choice, directions and outcomes expected from this tool.
