Authors' recommendations:
The evidence found about this technique is scarce and of very low methodological quality.
In general, some perianal injectable bulking agents were able to show certain effectiveness in randomized clinical trials against placebo: they included patients with fecal incontinence (FI) due to internal anal sphincter disruption or weakness, decreasing the FI episodes for a period ranging from six months to two years. However, all these studies used perianal injectable bulking agents other than Exantia®.
Several health insurance companies consider there is not enough evidence to cover this type of treatment because the follow-up period of these studies is short.
Exantia® is a perianal injectable bulking agent which could have similar effectiveness to other agents, nevertheless, its effectiveness has not been demonstrated in studies of high methodological quality yet.
