Authors' recommendations: At request of the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, the Health Council of the Netherlands evaluates and judges the carcinogenic properties of substances to which workers are occupationally exposed. The evaluation is performed by the Subcommittee on Classifying carcinogenic substances of the Dutch Expert Committee on Occupational Safety of the Health Council, hereafter called the committee. In addition, the ministry asked the Health Council to re-evaluate a series of substances, and to include in the re-evaluation a proposal for classification on germ cell mutagenicity. In this report, such a reevaluation was made for acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is mainly used as intermediate, for instance in the production of acetic acid. It, furthermore, is used for instance as a solvent in the production of various chemical substances, and as a fish and fruit preservative.
