Authors' objectives: The goals of this Special Report are to identify factors that determine medication adherence; to briefly review current studies on the impact of interventions to improve medication adherence; and to highlight approaches currently being used to improve medication adherence and health outcomes. Although the effectiveness of some approaches remains unclear, this Report may guide initiatives to improve medication adherence.
Authors' recommendations: Medication adherence is a complex behavior requiring multifactorial interventions that consider consumer perspectives. Improving medication adherence is a continual process to prevent adherence rates from dropping over time, even among patients who are initially adherent.
