Authors' recommendations:
After considering the strength of the available evidence in relation to the safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of HbA1c testing for the diagnosis of diabetes, MSAC supported public funding of a new MBS item for quantitation of HbA1c for the diagnosis of diabetes in asymptomatic patients. MSAC did not support a confirmatory test to establish the diagnosis.
MSAC considered that the test in general should be offered once every 3 years to asymptomatic patients and limited to the smaller group of asymptomatic patients with additional indicators of concern to no more than once per person per year.
