Authors' recommendations:
After considering the strength of the available evidence in relation to the safety, clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of single balloon enteroscopy for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, MSAC supports public funding by:
- amending current MBS items 30680, 30682, 30684 and 30686 to include the term 'balloon enteroscopy' to encompass both single and double balloon enteroscopy;
- amending current MBS items 30684 and 30686 to include argon plasma coagulation in the therapeutic interventions listed; and amending current MBS items 11820 and 11823 (for capsule endoscopy) to include
the term 'balloon enteroscopy' for consistency.
