Authors' recommendations:
In 2010, an estimated 219,000 patients underwent a total of 397,000 coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures and 1,029,000 cardiac catheterizations in the United States. Perioperative bleeding necessitating blood transfusion is common during cardiac surgeries, particularly procedures involving cardiopulmonary bypass. Up to 10% to 15% of the nation's blood supply is utilized in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, and use is increasing largely owing to the performance of increasingly complex procedures. For many patients with complex cardiac conditions, other circumstances contribute to coagulopathy, including heparinization, extracorporeal circulation, and induced hypothermia.
